ISLAMABAD: Water Release Update from Indus River System Authority

The Indus River System Authority, on Sunday, released 115,400 cusecs water from different rim stations against an inflow of 59,700 cusecs, reported Associated Press of Pakistan, as the water management in the region continues.

According to the latest information provided by IRSA, the water level in the River Indus at Tarbela Dam was 1,526.46 feet. It is enough above the dead level of 1,398 feet to make the reservoir a healthy one for irrigation and hydropower purposes.

The inflow at Tarbela Dam was 31,400 cusecs while the outflow was recorded at 55,000 cusecs. This is basically the difference that needs to create a balance for the recharge of water meant for lower points for agriculture, especially in arid areas.

The situation at Mangla Dam is also no less encouraging. The water level in the River Jhelum here rose to 1,184.30 feet, which was 134.30 feet higher than its dead level of 1,050 feet. This height has been sufficient for power generation and irrigation purposes in the overall catchment areas.

At the Mangla Dam, the inflow was 5,900 cusecs, while the outflow was 38,000 cusecs. The data reflects good water management in the region, meeting agricultural productivity and ensuring the needs of locals are catered to.

IRSA’s round-the-clock monitoring and reporting become all the more vital for the stakeholders-farmers and energy producers-in order to sort out water use vagaries. The authority envisages such updates to ensure greater transparency in the large-scale sustainable management of the river systems across the country.
